Post-Settlement Care

Care After Your Accident Claim Settles

Settlement closes a file. It does not close a chapter of your life. For many people the day the claim ends is the day the appointments stop, and that is often the point at which the loss of structure and support is felt most.

You can continue with us. If you were treated here, your clinicians already know your history. If you were treated elsewhere, you are equally welcome.

What Changes

What Settlement Actually Ends

Understanding what stops, and what does not, makes the transition considerably less unsettling.

Insurer-Funded Treatment Stops

Once a claim settles, your auto insurer no longer funds treatment. Approvals, treatment plans and direct billing come to an end, and any care you continue is arranged privately.

Nothing about that reflects on whether you still need support. It reflects only that the file is closed.

The Structure Disappears

Regular appointments, someone checking on your progress, a plan with dates in it. Many people do not realise how much that scaffolding was holding until it is removed.

Settlement can also bring an unexpected flatness. The thing you were working toward has arrived, and the difficulties have not entirely gone.

Your Recovery Continues

Trauma, sleep disturbance, chronic pain and low mood follow their own timeline, not the claim’s. Symptoms often re-emerge under stress, at anniversaries, after another collision, or when life becomes demanding again.

Continuing care is not a sign that treatment failed. Most recovery is not linear.

Paying For It

How Care Can Be Funded Now

Cost is the first question almost everyone asks, and there are more options than most people expect.

Your settlement funds

Many settlements include an amount intended for future care. If yours did, some of it was calculated on the basis that treatment would continue.

We can provide a written plan setting out recommended frequency and approximate cost, which makes it easier to budget rather than guess.

Extended health benefits

If you have coverage through your own or a partner’s employer, most plans cover psychology, psychotherapy, and dietitian services, and many cover physiotherapy and dietetics. Amounts vary considerably.

We are happy to help you check what your plan allows and how far it will go, before you commit to anything.

Sliding scale and self-pay

We offer sliding-scale rates where cost is a genuine barrier. Tell us what is realistic for you and we will tell you honestly what we can do.

Care can also be spaced out. Monthly or seasonal sessions maintain progress at a fraction of the cost of weekly attendance, and for many people at this stage that is exactly the right intensity.

Protected accounts and financing

Accident benefits settling does not always mean every matter is closed. Where a tort action, a long-term disability claim, or another matter remains open, we can invoice on a protected account, so treatment continues now and is accounted for when that matter resolves. Your lawyer can confirm whether this applies to you, and we are glad to speak with them directly.

We also offer third-party financing through MediCard, so treatment can begin now and be paid for over time.

Employee assistance programs

If you have returned to work, your employer’s EAP may fund a block of counselling sessions at no cost to you. Many people forget this exists.

Ask your human resources contact, or ask us and we will explain how it typically works.

Income and disability supports

If your ability to work remains affected, Ontario Works, ODSP and CPP Disability may apply. We complete the supporting clinical documentation these programmes require.

We can also help with Employment Insurance sickness benefit certificates, disability insurance forms, and Disability Tax Credit certification, which many people are eligible for and never claim.

Some of these supports also carry health benefit coverage that can fund continued care.

What We Offer

Care Available to You Now

The same services, arranged around what you actually need rather than what a treatment plan was approved for.

Ongoing Counselling

Trauma therapy, anxiety and depression treatment, and support with the adjustment that follows a long claim. Weekly, monthly or as needed.

Maintenance & Check-Ins

Periodic appointments to keep progress steady and catch difficulties early, rather than waiting until things have deteriorated.

Physiotherapy

Continued pain management, conditioning and mobility work, including home visits where travelling is difficult.

Nutrition

Ongoing support from a Registered Dietitian where eating, weight or digestion remain affected.

Therapy Groups

A lower-cost option that also addresses the isolation many people feel once a claim ends and the appointments stop.

Crisis Support

If something acute happens later, you can contact us directly. You will not be starting from the beginning with a stranger.

Before You Settle

Plan For This Beforehand If You Can

If your claim has not yet settled, this is worth raising with your lawyer now. Future care costs can be accounted for in a settlement, but only if someone has documented what that care will involve.

We can prepare a future care plan setting out what treatment is likely to be needed, at what frequency, and for how long. Your lawyer can then use that in the settlement discussion rather than estimating.

This is one of the more common regrets we hear. People settle, funding ends, and only then discover how much continued treatment would have cost. Raising it early costs nothing.

We are not able to give legal or financial advice. Your lawyer is the right person for that conversation, and we are glad to provide the clinical detail they need.

Coming Back

Returning to Us Is Simple

If you were our client before, your records are here and your clinician may well still be. Call us and say you would like to come back. There is no formal re-referral process and no need to explain everything again from the start.

If you were treated somewhere else during your claim, you are just as welcome. We will ask about your history and any reports you have, but you are not required to produce paperwork before we can see you.

There is no time limit. People come back six months, three years or a decade later, sometimes because something has resurfaced and sometimes because they finally have the space to deal with what they set aside.

Appointments are available at our four clinics, in your home, or online anywhere in Ontario.

Two Further Options

Worth knowing about at this stage, whether your recovery has stalled or you simply want to stay well.

TMS & Neurofeedback

If depression or anxiety has not lifted despite therapy and medication, transcranial magnetic stimulation and neurofeedback offer a different route. Neither involves medication, and TMS is an established treatment for depression that has not responded to other approaches.

Available at our Oakville clinic. Many people reach this point only after a claim ends, which is often when it becomes clear that something more is needed.

CTT Wellness Division

Proactive mental wellness, stress management and preventive care, for support that is about staying well rather than treating an injury.

For many people this is the natural next step once active treatment has finished. It is a gentler, less clinical form of support, and often the right intensity after a claim closes.
