Motor Vehicle Accident Care

Injured in a Car Accident?

A collision injures more than your body. We treat the anxiety, flashbacks, driving fear and pain that follow, and we bill your auto insurer directly, so approved treatment costs you nothing out of pocket.

All your care in one place. Therapy, physiotherapy and nutrition can be planned together. Or keep the providers you have. We’re glad to work with them.

Your family may be covered too. Spouses, children, parents and caregivers can often get their own funded counselling, even if they weren’t in the car. We’ll explain and do the paperwork.

Why Critical Trauma Therapy

What You Will Not Find Elsewhere

Many clinics offer counselling. These are the things that are genuinely difficult to find anywhere else in Ontario.

Care in Your Own Language

Medical interpreters in over 300 languages at every appointment, at no cost to you. You shouldn’t need a family member to translate the hardest conversation of your life. Interpreting is provided through Boostlingo, an independently security-audited platform, and sessions are confidential and never recorded.

We Built the Assessments That Were Missing

Three assessments of our own, for driving anxiety, sleep and barriers to recovery, so what affects you most is measured objectively and taken seriously. Available nowhere else in Ontario.

Measured, Not Assumed

FDA-cleared devices measure sleep, driving anxiety, movement and strength, so you can see objective data on your own recovery.

Prescribers on the Same Team

Nurse practitioners and psychiatry on the same team, so medication questions don’t mean another waiting list.

Cost Is Not the Deciding Factor

Direct billing to auto insurance and extended health benefits, a sliding scale, protected accounts through BridgePoint, and MediCard financing for private-pay sessions.

Part of the Health System, Not Beside It

Two of our clinics are inside Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines, with validated parking. We’re also a member of two Ontario Health Teams.

What Our Clients Say

Reviews left publicly by our clients. Names have been withheld for privacy.

“

Critical Trauma Therapy has had an integral role in saving my life, and has stood by my side since my life-altering car collision five years ago. I completed the TMS protocol after a severe traumatic brain injury, and the improvements shown on the qEEG afterwards were truly astonishing.

From the front staff to the therapists, they are wonderful, very effective, and both my daughters feel very supported. We have had to adjust appointments to fit their schedules and they are beyond accommodating.

Common Questions

Questions We Hear Most

How long is the wait for a first appointment?

+

There is no waitlist. Most new clients are seen within a week of reaching out, at any of our four clinics or virtually.

If you were injured in a motor vehicle accident, your auto insurer has 10 business days to respond to a funding request. We know waiting isn’t easy when you’re struggling, so on a case-by-case basis we may begin treatment before funding is confirmed.

Does insurance cover therapy after a car accident?

+

Yes. Treatment after a motor vehicle accident is funded through your auto insurer’s accident benefits. We prepare the OCF-18 treatment plan and bill your insurer directly, so approved treatment costs you nothing out of pocket.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a therapist?

+

No referral is needed for counselling, psychotherapy, physiotherapy, or dietitian services. You can contact us directly. Some extended health plans will only reimburse physiotherapy or dietitian services if a doctor has referred you, so it is worth checking your plan before you claim. We will tell you if a referral is likely to be needed in your case, and help you obtain one.

Is therapy covered by my extended health benefits?

+

Most extended health plans cover psychotherapy, psychology, social work, physiotherapy, and dietitian services, though the amount and which professions qualify vary. We can help you check your plan, and we offer sliding-scale and self-pay rates if you don’t have coverage.

What age do you start seeing children?

+

The youngest age we see depends on the clinic: from age 4 in Grimsby and St. Catharines, from age 5 in Oakville, and from age 10 in Kitchener. For children as young as 2, play therapy may be an option, so please call us to talk about whether it’s right for your child. Our physiotherapists see clients from age 4, and our Registered Dietitians from age 6.

What is EMDR, and is it right for trauma?

+

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-established trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their charge. It’s one of several approaches we use for PTSD and complex trauma, your assessment determines the best fit.

What if therapy and medication haven’t worked for my depression?

+

That’s what our TMS program in Oakville is for. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment for depression and anxiety that hasn’t responded to medication or talk therapy.

Can someone come to my home?

+

Yes. We provide in-home and in-community therapy across the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Niagara, Kitchener–Waterloo, Gravenhurst and their surrounding areas.

I have a lawyer. Can they refer me to you?

+

Yes, and many of our clients arrive that way. Ask your lawyer or their law clerk to send us a referral, or give them our details and we will take it from there. We work with personal injury firms across Ontario and are used to coordinating alongside a legal file.

If you would prefer, we can contact your lawyer directly on your behalf. Tell us who they are and we will make the introduction, request the documents we need, and keep them informed as your treatment proceeds.

Where your lawyer is involved in your file, they will ordinarily receive our assessment reports and progress updates as part of the claim. The detailed content of your sessions is a separate matter, and we will explain clearly what is shared and why before anything is released.

I do not have a lawyer. Can I still get services?

+

Yes. You do not need a lawyer to receive treatment, and you never need one to contact us. Most of our clients come to us directly.

If you were injured in a motor vehicle accident, we complete the paperwork required to request funding from your insurer, so having legal representation is not a condition of getting care. We can also explain the process in plain terms so you understand what you are entitled to.

If you would like legal advice, we are glad to talk through what that involves, and we can suggest firms experienced in accident benefits and personal injury work. The choice is entirely yours, and we receive nothing for making a suggestion.

Can I come for just one service?

+

Yes. Come to us for the one service you want, and nothing more. If you would like counselling but already have a physiotherapist you trust, keep them. If you want physiotherapy and would rather not discuss your mental health, that is entirely your choice.

We mention the other services because many people do not realise they are available or funded, not because they come as a package. Nobody will be pushed towards anything they have not asked for.

We are also glad to work alongside providers you already see, and with your written consent we will coordinate with them. Without it, we will not.
